T-Systems equips movie theaters in Vienna and Nuremberg for digital movies

T-Systems implements solutions for the showing of digital movies in Europe’s largest movie theater, the UCI KINOWELT Millennium City in Vienna, Austria. The project presents the completely integrated value-added-chain: from the end-to-end digital distribution process for big movies and its management in the multiplex cinema to the digital showing. Trailers, advertisements as well as additional alternative content can be integrated into this process. The advantages of the digital solutions developed by T-Systems are in the open architecture for different movie formats which can be distributed at significantly lower costs. The high security of the transmission, storage and showing systems used for the distribution as well as the impressive image quality are additional performance features.

The services of Media&Broadcast, the media service provider of T-Systems, include the integration of UCI Millennium City in Vienna via satellite with Usingen as well as the entire showing and distribution technology including system management for three movie theaters.

Munich-based Kinoton is providing the special projectors and the connection to the movie technology. As a result, up to 1,230 moviegoers can experience this new technology on screens measuring up to 24 meters in width. This marks the first time that a commercially available solution reliably avoids the transfer of physical storage media and its associated risks and costs while simultaneously supporting and optimizing the operational processes in a multiplex movie theater. At the same time, T-Systems and Kinoton are also equipping two showing rooms of the Admiral Filmpalast in Nuremberg with identical technology.

Solutions in accordance with DCI specifications T-Systems prepared its proposal for digital cinema in accordance with the international specifications of the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI). Its central component is the Digital Cinema Factory™, a hardware and software solution which describes the entire distribution process of movies. In this process, the showing of the encrypted movies takes place via satellite or other broadband data paths to the server systems in the movie theaters, where the films are decoded for the showing via specially created codes that are sent along with the signal.

"The system supports all relevant features of an integrated workflow, and as part of the technological developments, we will move our Digital Cinema Feature Film™ server to the new JPEG2000 format by no later than the end of this year," says Jo Brüggen, Director of System Solutions for the cinema and film industry at T-Systems.

The Media&Broadcast business segment of T-Systems has been involved in the definition of digital cinema since 1998 in the context of national as well as international projects. The media service provider is currently Europe's only provider of an end-to-end digital solution for the movie industry.
