TI DLP Cinema® presence at ShowEast highlights advancement of Digital Cinema Industry
With digital and 3D screenings, and thousands of DLP Cinema® projectors deployments announced, digital cinema heads to the mainstream
Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE: TXN) this week at
ShowEast, one of the premier events for the motion picture theatre industry,
will highlight the advancement of digital cinema with the screening of five
soon-to-market studio movies, including a special 3D presentation of Disney's
Chicken Little on a Christie CP2000 Digital DLP Cinema® projector. In addition,
this will be the first theatrical trade show since the announcement of several
plans to deploy digital cinema systems with DLP Cinema projectors to thousands
of theatres throughout North America and Europe.
The new 3D experience enabled by DLP Cinema projectors was first demonstrated
and discussed at ShoWest earlier this year in a special presentation featuring
George Lucas, James Cameron, Robert Rodriguez, and Robert Zemeckis, all pioneers
in digital movie making. A Christie CP2000 projector featuring DLP Cinema
technology will be utilized to screen Disney's Chicken Little, which will be the
first 3D movie released digitally that will be presented with the enhanced 3D
capabilities built into the DLP Cinema projectors. This new experience allows
moviegoers to immerse themselves in an unparalleled viewing experience with
incredible color reproduction and true 3D imaging, a major improvement over the
red/blue anaglyph techniques of the past.
In addition, the hot topic of the show stands to be the rollout of digital
cinema. While it took years to test the technologies and set universal technical
standards, Digital Cinema Initiative announced its final specification in July
of this year, around the same time companies began finalizing business plans and
announcing mass deployments of digital cinema systems and DLP Cinema projectors
to theatres throughout North America and Europe, including:
§ Christie/AccessIT announced that they are financing 2500-4000 screens in the
U.S. and Canada with their business plan. Recently, Disney and Fox have agreed
to make their movies available to these screens and to pay digital booking fees.
§ Dolby and RealD recently installed more than 80 screens in the U.S. market,
equipped for digital 3D presentation of the November 4 release of Disney's
Chicken Little.
§ Avica has announced a 500 screen deployment in Ireland.
§ UK Film Counsel will install 250 DLP Cinema projectors over the next two years
throughout the country.
§ XDC has announced 200-500 digital cinema systems to be installed throughout
Europe in the next few years.
TI plans to stay actively involved in the rollout and continued technical
innovation to improve the digital cinema experience. TI first showed a prototype
projector in 1997, and has remained dedicated to the advancement of the industry
since that time. DLP Cinema technology continues to be the only digital cinema
projection technology commercially deployed in theatres, and has had more than 6
year of successful in-field commercial testing.
"This is a very important time for the theatre industry, allowing theatre owners
to offer the incredible images and flexibility that a digital presentation and
system offer," said Doug Darrow, Brand & Marketing Manager, TI DLP Products.
"From pristine images that last throughout the run of the movie, to new
possibilities in 3D movies, to live events and real-time subtitling, the
advantages of digital cinema bring new possibilities to the theatrical
experience."
DLP Cinema® technology is currently deployed in more than 500 theatres worldwide
through manufacturers BARCO, Christie Digital and NEC. TI DLP Cinema® technology
