Christie Licenses KDM Management Software from Hoyts Cinema Technology Group to Enhance Exhibitor Offering in its Network Operations Centres

Christie®, the global leader in visual displays and audio technologies, is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Hoyts Cinema Technology Group to exclusively license their KDM Krawler system for use in Christie’s Network Operations Centres (NOC).

The move is part of Christie’s ongoing support of the NOCs it operates around the world, and continuing efforts to offer value-added services to its connected customers. Now known as the Christie KDM Assistant, the system allows the NOC to provide automatic delivery of KDMs directly to cinemas for movie playback. This will be an additional service provided to NOC-connected customers at no extra charge.

The Christie KDM Assistant service will be rolled out on November 1, 2015 in Australia and New Zealand, and subsequently in additional territories starting with North America.

“This will result in savings to cinemas that are already using the service and now it becomes available to all exhibitors connected to our NOC with no additional costs,” said Stephen Davis, General Manager, Christie-ICAA NOC. “This will add extra value to those who are already connected to the NOC. We hope to entice new exhibitors to sign up and enjoy the benefits of Christie’s KDM Assistant and all of the additional benefits of being connected.”

Adam Wrightson, General Manager, Hoyts Cinema Technology Group, added, “We are extremely proud of having the opportunity to take our homegrown ingenuity to the world through Christie and their world-class NOC services. This agreement underscores the close working relationship we have with Christie, and with Christie’s experience and expertise, this system will provide its connected customers with automated KDM delivery and the peace of mind which comes from a solution with a proven track record.”

“The KDM Krawler system is a great example of Australian Digital Cinema innovation,” said Dan Crack, Technical Manager, Grand Cinemas. “It runs unobtrusively in the background but provides us with a reliable delivery of KDMs on a constant basis. We’ve used it for the past two years and are looking forward to using it for many more years to come.”
  • Getting started and setting up of the KDM Assistant is simple, and no action is required for sites already using KDM Krawler system. The service will simply continue with the new name, Christie KDM Assistant. The advantages of this service include the following:
  • Fully automatic delivery and ingestion of KDMs directly to players
  • Cinemas receive report emails of KDMs delivered and ingested, including the Feature Title, Screen Numbers, and Valid Dates
  • Time savings – Cinemas no longer need to extract KDMs from emails and ingest into their systems
  • KDM Backups – Christie KDM Assistant keeps backups of all valid KDMs and reinstalls them if they are missing or deleted from a player
  • Fast KDM delivery and ingestion after emergency server swaps
The Central Hub for Cinema Support Activities
The Christie-ICAA NOC in Melbourne serves as the central hub for cinema support activities in Australia and New Zealand. It provides 24/7 monitoring of hardware such as projectors, players, IMBs, theater management systems and networks that connect all these components, and offers round-the-clock telephone support for all technical issues, including day-to-day operational questions.

Christie-ICAA NOC operators are fully connected to the equipment on site to quickly fix problems remotely with log files and this help to free up employees at the cinema to deal with their customers during the delay. Besides these, the NOC delivers value-added services such as remote software, firmware upgrades, patches and hot fixes to customers’ equipment. These services translate into savings for end users.

In the event of a major equipment failure, the NOC can escalate a technical problem to the respective service provider if needed, and supply them with details of the problem and equipment log files in advance of them being on site.

Backed by more than 85 years of experience in the cinema industry, the Christie-ICAA NOC and the new Christie KDM Assistant demonstrate Christie’s continued strong commitment to improve its on-going valued-added support services to exhibitors in Australia and New Zealand.
