Exhibitors Around the World Choose Christie Dual-Head 6P Laser Projection System to Deliver A Premium 3D Cinema Experience

Christie®, a leader in creating and sharing the world's best visual and audio experiences, is pleased to announce that an increasing number of exhibitors around the world have chosen its groundbreaking 6-Primary (6P) dual-head laser projection system as their preferred choice for a premium 3D cinema experience.

To date, about 100 state-of-the-art RGB laser projectors and hundreds of laser modules have been shipped to premium cinemas and theme parks around the world.

In Asia, theaters equipped with Christie laser projection technology include Tongzhou Wanda Cinema in Beijing (which boasts a 15-meter wide screen in its “Hall 9” auditorium), the iconic Shanghai Film Art Center (equipped with a 23-meter Oriental Mega Screen in Hall 1), Korea’s CGV Starium (fitted with a 32-meter wide screen) in Seoul, and SM Cinema’s latest large screen format auditorium (fitted with a 20.5-meter wide screen) in Cebu, the Philippines. SM Cinema will subsequently deploy an additional five units of Christie 6P laser projection system to expand its laser projection footprint in the Philippines. Notably, the Shanghai Film Art Center installation is the first commercial RGB laser projection system in the world that enabled Christie to accomplish the pioneering feat of placing this cutting-edge projection technology permanently within the reach of the mass audience. More 6P laser installations are scheduled for Asia in China, Korea, Australia and the Philippines in the coming months.

“We are very pleased with the brightness and performance of Christie’s 6P laser projection system in CGV Starium since the installation in October. The visuals look so natural and lifelike in 3D that you have to simply watch it to believe it,” said Nochan Park, senior manager, Cinema Technology Team, CGV. “We have used many cinema projectors over the last 20 years but nothing comes close to the 3D light levels, color fidelity, image uniformity, viewing comfort, and a sense of immersion produced by the Christie dual-head 6P laser system.”

Sharing the same sentiments, Maojun Zeng, CEO, Wanda Cinema Line, commented, “Christie’s 6P laser projection system produces bright and exceptional visuals in 3D that enables our flagship ‘Wanda Hall 9 Auditoriums’ to reach next level in delivering the ultimate viewing experience, so that our Hall 9 auditoriums can continue to maintain their industry-leading position.”

In North America, Seattle Cinerama, and Moody Gardens are among the first premium format theaters in the world to be fitted with the Christie 6P laser projection system.

Christie’s 6P laser technology has also been endorsed by Dolby as a foundation technology for Dolby Cinema™, a branded premium cinema offering for exhibitors and movie-goers that delivers the best cinema experience ever. To date, the famous El Capitan Theater in Hollywood as well as eight AMC Theaters across the United States are delivering this premium cinema experience, with 50 more AMC Prime locations scheduled to open in the United States by the end of 2016 and a total of 100 AMC Prime locations by 2024.

JT Bioscopen in Eindhoven and Hilversum in The Netherlands, UCI Cinesa in Spain and select theatres in the Cineplexx Linz chain in Austria are also Dolby Cinema installations, anchored by Christie laser projection.

With its improved viewing experience, higher efficiency, lower overall cost and the ability to achieve DCI color compliancy in both eye images, Christie’s dual-head 6P laser technology is the clear choice as the superior solution compared to single head systems. Exhibitors are able to light up huge screens at 14 foot-lamberts brightness, covering a screen area of almost four times the size versus the competition.

Anchored by the Christie Freedom® laser illumination system, the Christie CP42LH high frame rate 3DLP® 4K RGB laser projector produces a color gamut that exceeds the DCI P3 color and replicates the Rec. 2020 space, making it the most advanced RGB laser cinema projection system on the market. It consists of rack-mounted laser modules where each module can produce up to 5,000 lumens of white light. The scalability of this platform enables up to 12 laser modules to be easily added, removed, activated or disabled depending on the brightness requirements. This provides up to 60,000 lumens per rack. Each laser module is also independently cooled, providing built-in fault protection, improved efficiency and ultimate reliability.

Christie was the world’s first cinema projector manufacturer to receive the US FDA approval of variance, allowing the sale of laser projectors for use in commercial cinemas in the United States. So far, the 6P laser projection system has won several prestigious awards around the world, including the AV Innovation of the Year Award by leading British-based trade journal AV News, and the BIRTV Award sponsored by the Beijing International Radio, TV & Film Equipment Exhibition (BIRTV) committee and the Advanced Television Engineering journal in China.
