Barco has just signed an exclusive agreement with Bud Mayo, founder and former CEO of Cinedigm turned exhibitor, to install 19 screens in Mayo's East Coast theaters by the end of April as the first part of a widespread deployment planned for 2011. The new theater chain, called “Digiplex Destinations,” will be built through acquisition by Mayo and features Barco's 2K digital cinema projectors exclusively, which the company can readily supply to meet Mayo's aggressive installation schedule.
Digital cinema pioneer Barco is moving forward to immediately deploy the first of many projector systems for the new Digiplex Destinations circuit, which will be self-financed by Mayo. The deal also includes a service agreement which entails comprehensive installation, service, customer support and warranty by Barco.
“Over the years, I've become intimately acquainted with all of the digital cinema projectors in the market, and Barco's best-of-breed projectors and support team offer high quality and performance,” commented Bud Mayo, founder and former CEO of Cinedigm, the digital cinema pioneering company. “Having worked closely alongside Barco on the industry's digital cinema rollout over the past 10 years, I've seen the company and its products lead the market in innovation and reliability, and I look forward to strengthening our relationship over the coming years.”
The new Digiplex theater chain will emphasize a commitment to alternative content, with the goal of becoming a “destination theater” offering a variety of top-notch entertainment. In addition to 2D and 3D first-run movies, the cinemas will exhibit live and recorded broadcasts of theater, opera, and musical performances, interactive video gaming sessions, and more.
With Guinness World Record-winning brightness, Barco's 2K projectors feature vibrant colors and exceptionally rich contrast levels for an unparalleled 3D experience. The efficiency that enables this world record light output is the same technical superiority found in Barco's innovative optical systems, which results in the lowest total cost of ownership for exhibitors. Other cost-minimizing features include a modular design that enables easy serviceability, fast technician learning curves, and extended product lifetime.
“We are pleased and honored that Bud has selected Barco, building upon our long-term partnership in the digital cinema industry,” commented Patrick Lee, VP Digital Cinema for Barco North America. “We look forward to supporting the success of Bud's new cinema venture in every facet of his business, beginning with the immediate deployment of our industry-leading 2K projectors.”
