CJ 4DPLEX (
www.cj4dx.com), the world's leading cinema technology company, announced today that 4DX, the world's leading multi-sensory film format, closed out a record-breaking first quarter of 2019. Within the first three months of the year, the innovative film format drew in 6.1 million attendees worldwide, bringing in $72 million at the global box office and increasing its box office performance.
This marks the first time 4DX has reached this record high attendance and box office result since making its debut in 2009. Top performing countries, Europe, Australia/Oceania, and Asia grossed higher in the box office compared to last year, and amongst the highest grossing countries include France, China and Korea.
- Europe saw a 38% box office increase with France at a 125% increase
- Australia/Oceania saw a 274% box office increase
- Asia saw an overall 7% increase in box office performance with China and Korea taking the lead at 18% and 4%, respectively
The top five 4DX markets -- China, Japan, Korea, France, and UK -- grossed over $39 million accounting for just over 50% of the total box office for Q1. 4DX's success so far in the first quarter can be tied to extremely strong box office performances from both Hollywood blockbusters and strong local titles; China's "The Wandering Earth" and Japan's "Dragon Ball Super Broly", attracting nearly 1 million moviegoers during its run.
4DX enhances the on-screen visuals of action-packed blockbusters, transcending the traditional cinema experience through special effects including motion-synchronized seats, wind, fog, rain, lightning, snow, bubble, vibration, and scents. The result is one of the most innovative cinema formats in the industry, drawing fans into the action on the big screen. To date, more than 73,000 4DX seats operate in 629 auditoriums, spanning 63 countries.
