Qube Cinema recently supplied its XP-I server and Xi 4K Integrated Media Blocks (IMBs) for Global Immersion’s first GSX giant flat screen theater installed at the Peoria Riverfront Museum (PRM) in Illinois. This 4K 3D system brings the world’s highest resolution digital giant screen display to the newly opened theater. This is the first installation of the 4K by 3K GSX giant screen cinema system, providing visitors to the museum with the immersive experience afforded by stunning 3D digital imagery.
The installation uses a single Qube XP-I server, streaming 3D DCI content to two synchronized Xi 4K IMBs in two 4K DCI-compliant projectors. An additional server, provided by Global Immersion, combined with their Imagefusion™ technology, will deliver 4:3 and alternative formats and media streams, allowing for unrestricted access to movies, as well as alternative media and live content.
“Qube Cinema has the server and IMB technology we need to deliver DCI media for our GSX giant screen cinemas,” said Martin Howe, CEO of Global Immersion. “With Qube Cinema’s support, GSX delivers 2K and 4K 3D in DCI mode. Qube’s technology provides an integral contribution to GSX as one of the world’s highest performance digital immersive theaters. We’re very happy to be working with Qube.”
Using a single DCP, the Qube XP-I server is capable of streaming up to 1,000 Mbps of data through its dual Gigabit Ethernet interface, sufficient throughput to support dual 4K projectors at up to 30 fps per eye.
“The Qube Xi IMB is a powerful component within GSX, and has the strength and versatility that allowed us to offer the Peoria Riverfront Museum a theater primed to show an unrivaled range of media and presentations,” said Howe. “The museum will have access to a broad film library and flexibility to control the content they deliver.”
Along with 4K 3D digital projection, the PRM’s giant screen theater, which opened this week, has a five storey tall, 70' wide screen, stadium seating and 14,000 watt surround sound, providing a unique immersive experience to visitors.
“The Global Immersion giant screen theater system, using the Qube Cinema server, is ideal because of the flexibility it offers,” said Jim Richerson, president and CEO of Peoria Riverfront Museum. “High-resolution 3D educational documentaries that entertain will allow us to advance the museum's mission. During the day we'll play classic documentaries, distributed by content providers like National Geographic and K2 Communications. We also plan to play current and classic Hollywood movies in the evening, as well as showing simulcasts of sporting and music events, or holding video gaming or YouTube festivals.”
