Digi-Flicks Entertainment Changes Name to DFE Technologies
Name Change Signals Expansion to Broad-based Digital Cinema and Post-productionTechnology
Company
Digi-Flicks® Entertainment, a leader
in digital cinema research and technology, is officially changing its name to
DFE Technologies, effective today. Best known for its Digital Cinema Delivery
System, a complete end-to-end solution for distributing high-density digital
content, the company is rebranding itself to reflect its commitment to
developing a broad range of entertainment-related technologies including
leading-edge digital cinema solutions, and announcing its entry into other areas
such as digital film post-production.
The announcement was made at Showeast 2005 by Mark Jankins, Chief Technology
Officer of DFE Technologies. The company’s new website also is public today (www.dfetechnologies.com).
“Our name change to DFE Technologies signals our ongoing transformation to a
entertainment technology company with emphasis on digital cinema and digital
post-production,” said Jankins. “With digital cinema on the cusp of becoming
part of the movie-going experience, a broad range of technologies are necessary
to support all parts of the entertainment production chain: from the studios
where product is created, to the post houses that process and edit the content,
to the distributors and theaters where content is screened. DFE Technologies is
developing products to stimulate the growth of this community, based on its
expertise with handling, storing and distributing high-density digital content.”
Through its sister companies, PlasterCITY Digital Post, a Hollywood-based
post-production facility and Ears XXI Productions, a digital film production
company founded by filmmaker Christopher Coppola, all avenues of digital cinema
technology will be explored, Jankins added.
At Showeast, DFE Technologies is showcasing a pre-production prototype of the
Digital Cinema Delivery System. Components include:
● DFE Network Port: A network-attached storage device designed for exhibitors
which delivers a full gigabit of network connectivity. Each Network Port
contains two drive bays for rugged DFE SmartPacs that are hot-swappable. The
Network Port is rack mounted with a 2RU chassis. Network connectivity is
maintained even when drives are not installed.
● DFE SmartPacs: A rugged storage and distribution solution for digital cinema
content. Each SmartPac contains two drives: a 250 or 400 GB SATA drive, and a
separate memory for storing status drive performance and user-defined data.
Drives are encased in a protective milled aluminum shell Each SmartPac includes
a rugged shipping case which simplifies distribution to and from exhibitors.
● DFE Duplicator: Creates identical copies of DFE SmartPacs. Additional modules
can be added to increase duplication capacity as necessary, with no increase in
duplication time. Sector-by-sector duplication via a two-pass duplication
algorithm ensures that all duplicated drives are identical.
● DFE Drive Diagnostic Backbone: Unique technology that continually monitors
every drive throughout duplication, use and reuse by exhibitors. The DFE
Duplicator analyzes the “health” of each drive’s performance to insure perfect
failure-free picture delivery to theaters.
