Avica Announces Opening of European Operations Headquartered in Thurles, Co. Tipperary
Digital cinema technology and
services leader, Avica Technology Corporation, formally announced the opening of
its European operations headquarters today in Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
From this new location and via its Avica Europe subsidiary, Avica will conduct
additional software development efforts to support the Avica FilmStore™ family
of products for the preparation, distribution and screening of Digital Cinema
content. Avica’s industry-leading suite of software complies with requirements
set forth by the major Hollywood studios and has been used for over 90,000
digital cinema screenings worldwide including recent international blockbusters
Shrek II and The Day after Tomorrow.
“Based on our experience in the US and Asian markets,” said Nicholas Clay,
Avica’s Chairman and CEO, “we believe Europe offers tremendous potential for
Digital Cinema. In recent months, distributors and exhibitors throughout Europe
have indicated strong interest in the benefits from digital distribution and
screening of Digital Cinema content. With the commitment of distributors to make
digital content available and exhibitors to screen this content, we believe
there is a significant opportunity to roll out Digital Cinema systems in Europe
and fully support ventures such as the UK Film Council’s ‘Digital Screen
Network’.”
Avica Europe will also include an operations centre for the management of
Digital Cinema content.
Clay reports that Avica chose the location of its European operations based on
the availability of a highly skilled, technology-focused workforce, especially
from the nearby Tipperary Institute. He added that the support of local and
national governments for new technology companies as well as the favourable
general business climate of the region make Thurles an attractive location for
Avica. The office will be located in the Shannon Development Tipperary
Technology Park, which is a part of Shannon Development Knowledge Network.
Further, Avica’s FilmStore suite of products include Dell enterprise servers as
a core technology component. Clay said that the opportunity to locate closely to
Dell’s European manufacturing facility was an added attraction in Avica’s
decision.
