The Winter’s Tale at Shakespeare’s Globe to Be Broadcast Live to Cinemas By More2Screen on 4 October 2018

As Michelle Terry embarks on her first season as Artistic Director, More2Screen has been appointed by Shakespeare’s Globe to broadcast a new production of The Winter’s Tale live by satellite to cinemas across the UK, Ireland and selected European territories on Thursday 4 October 2018. This signals the Globe’s commitment to ensuring live broadcasts of their productions are available to the widest possible audience across the UK, followed by a worldwide recorded roll-out in 2019.

The Winter’s Tale is Shakespeare’s great play of the irrational and inexplicable, illustrating how uncontrollable emotions can range across gender, country, class and age. Its universe is full of monsters, gods and natural disasters with a colossal sweep that takes audiences from the stifling atmosphere of the Sicilian court to the unbuttoned joy of a Bohemian festival.

Staged at the beautiful and iconic Globe Theatre in London, this new production will be directed by Blanche McIntyre, who is returning to the Globe having previously directed The Comedy of Errors in 2014 and As You Like It in 2015. Winner of the 2011 Critics’ Circle Most Promising Newcomer Award, she has most recently directed The Norman Conquests at Chichester Festival Theatre and has also worked at the Donmar Warehouse, Nottingham Playhouse and the RSC. The play stars Will Keen (The CrownWolf Hall) as Leontes, Priyanga Burford (W1AMarcella) as Hermione and Annette Badland (EastEndersFather Brown) as Old Shepherd.

Christine Costello, CEO, More2Screen comments: "We’re very proud to be appointed by Shakespeare’s Globe to distribute The Winter’s Tale to our cinema partners both in the UK and internationally. The Globe is a very special theatre recognised worldwide for its unique presentation of Shakespeare’s works and this release will be welcomed by the ever-growing global audience for Shakespearean productions at the cinema.”

Chui-Yee Cheung, Head of Film Distribution, Shakespeare’s Globe, comments: “We are delighted to be working with More2Screen to bring our new production of The Winter’s Tale to cinemas around the world. Our ongoing Globe On Screen series has enabled us to share our iconic theatre with an even wider audience, bringing Shakespeare’s best loved stories to big screens near and far.”

Shakespeare’s Globe
The Globe Theatre season runs from April to October. The 2018 season opened on 25 April with Hamlet and As You Like It presented by the Globe Ensemble. It continues with Barrie Rutter’s The Two Noble Kinsmenand Blanche McIntyre’s The Winter’s Tale. Next to open is Othello, directed by Claire van Kampen. Two new plays will also premiere at the Globe this season: Emilia by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm and Eyam by Matt Hartley.

The Globe’s education programme includes the annual ‘Playing Shakespeare with Deutsche Bank’ production, created especially for young people, which opened in The Globe in February 2018. This year’s production was Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Michael Oakley, with 20,000 free tickets given to schools across London and Birmingham.
