In 2018 Krix Loudspeakers and Trinnov Audio
collaborated on the world’s first 24.10.10 never
to be repeated Atmos home cinema system in the
Melbourne Hi-Fi Show. Visitors were blown away. Half-hour sessions for the
whole show were filled to beyond capacity.
Wallis is an old and highly respected brand in
South Australia. In 2019 Krix and Wallis Cinemas in
Adelaide South Australia was discussing an audio
upgrade rollout for its cinema chain. Wallis visited the 24.10.10 show and was
visibly impressed. Krix was asked to bring a new level of excitement to 7.1
audio for their chain, matching the level of excitement that the audience got
at the HiFi show, with
an eye on cost.
Another part of the brief was related to an
industry-wide complaint that vocals were often lost if
cinema levels were played at less than fader 7,
because the cinema-going audience generally objects to that volume. We knew that we could ameliorate this problem
with the help of some of the sophisticated filter software and phase
corrections in the Ovation processor.
Being known to think out of the square and size is
everything (as long as you have finesse) and the
mad scientists at Krix were left to design a new
system. Being partnered with Trinnov opened a whole new world of possibilities.
The concept was to reproduce 16 Hz to 18kHz.
This was to be holistic design using the resources
of Krix Loudspeaker Engineering and manufacturing
prowess, the Trinnov processor’s awesome
capabilities and the client’s enthusiasm to improve the acoustics and other
visual improvements to enhance the image and so on.
The answer was Quake, the system includes 10 Krix
Custom Subwoofers with specially tuned cabinets to extend the low end. 6 were
paired with the side, and the back wall surrounds with a 15 degree angled front
baffle to cosmetically match with the existing surrounds. The other four are for
behind the screen. The screen channels are Krix 4 ways.
Aside from the obvious sub-bass capability, the
precise time alignment of all elements of the
loudspeaker system, the Trinnov Ovation Audio
processor delivers clarity and demonstrates an immersive experience from a 7.1
mix.
“We used the Ovation 16i24o and used all channels
to deliver exactly the above. Once the system had
been measured, and the optimizer did its job, we
were able to sit in the auditorium and “play.” The result was magic; we were
able to use the processor to its capacity to adjust practically everything.
Patrons can now enjoy the film as the director intended.
Blockbusters have more impact, and again the dialogue is more intelligible, and
the special effects are clearer and immersive. The whole project was well
within budget, and it has created interest in the community with patrons
requesting to see the film in that auditorium. Ultimately, this means that
there will be a favorable return on investment. The experience is accompanied
by a custom Quake trailer, branding and highlighting the experience.
“Our new cinema concept
“Quake”, featuring a range of Krix speakers and Trinnov processing, has been an
incredibly successful project. We are extremely pleased with the result and
have noticed increased patronage after release to the public. As a matter of
fact, we have patrons asking for it”
“We’re very pleased with
the support from Krix and Trinnov, with both the installation and ongoing
support and training. We feel that we have a lifetime partnership with both
these companies and with the success that Quake has seen, we are now expanding
to several more locations”
Glyn Berry. Manager / Wallis Mitcham Cinemas
“To sum up in a few words,
this is all about the experience and excitement that cinema can bring for the
patron”
Scott Krix, Founder Krix Loudspeakers.
“From the first minutes of
meeting the Krix brothers at CineEurope 2017, we knew they understood what the
Trinnov technology would add to their already excellent speakers. The Quake
system was a challenging yet welcome project that will serve as a template for
future collaborations.”
